I have been trying to grasp the right words for this blog. My mind went in about fifteen different directions. I love seeing new things. New cultures. New experiences. New connections. However I can’t appreciate new connections without realizing how very important existing ones are. Editing this day reminded me of the importance of connections + experiences. Refreshed my mind on how much impact moments really do have.
For instance, if I wouldn’t have taken the job to work at ICAN ( Independence Counseling Advocacy Network) I wouldn’t have spent so much time with this family all those years back. Which in turn would make this “just another fun wedding”. Instead. I took a career path in my early years to help support people with disabilities. I was introduced to this young man who scribbled his name on my heart forever. Just so happens his big brother was a classmate of mine, a SUPER INTELLIGENT classmate of mine I might add. So when the email came through that he was planning this intimate wedding – I made sure to make room on my books for them.
As you will soon notice, his bride is not only STUNNING but has different cultural traditions than what I typically shoot in Southern Minnesota. It was so refreshing. It was awe-inspiring. When I started this gig I kept telling myself I need to get the “big weddings” that is where the enjoyment is. Work my way up the ladder. If the crash with COVID taught me anything with my business it is that those thoughts were so far from what I ACTUALLY enjoy.
All this right here. The little table for the most important people in their lives. The constant hugs. And smiles. The dad’s taking a picture of anything + everything they could. The sheer joy of two families joining as one. The moments that are unscripted and happen naturally without the chaos of 325 wedding guests, a timeline, + stress. Not to mention I consider each one of them family.
So maybe you are questioning your path. Your spot in the grand timeline. The ladder of your career. I hope you can find amazing little bonuses like I did with these guys. I don’t have an image of it but do you want to know what made my day after shooting this? Receiving this little thank you card. Nope not with the payment. Nope not a “gift”. Sweet words and two copies of the polaroid pictures they took on their day. Those will be framed and with me For. Ever. After all, it is the little things.
