Families. One of my most beloved “portraits” to shoot. When I first started shooting I thought I had to have all these standards, and my images had to reflect those that I had seen on social media.
Little did I know one of the best parts about it, is just chatting with the clients and letting the shots happen on their own. Now let’s be real, family shoots are STRESSFUL as HE**. Each and every mother of one or three or seven knows that. Each and every Man, boyfriend, lover, or husband knows that.
So I got intimidated for quite some time thinking I needed to stray away from family shoots. People are nervous in front of the camera. People are awkward in front of the camera. Dads dis-like it. Kids dis-like it. Moms want Pinterest worthy results. Sometimes it felt like trying to turn salt into pepper. Impossible.
Then I realized that each family had their own story to tell. I also realized family shoots should be a MAXIMUM of 30 minutes or less because after that the attitude, the luster, the pretty curls & crispy gelled hair … IT’S ALLLLL GONE.
I decided I wanted to make salt into sugar… they look similar right? Look at these guys. I married them … clearly I PERSONALLY didn’t marry them, but I stood by watched, supported, & captured them. Now they had this handsome hunk of a baby a bit earlier then expected, none the less HEALTHY as can be.
Our dynamic of picture taking time together has forever been changed. But look at them. Look at them LOVE that boy. Look at them love each other. What you don’t get to see is the conversation we have. The support they have for each other, the complaints we get to go over about the not so joyous parts about being fresh parents.
I adore the way parents look at their children, especially before they can talk back … even more so before the tantrums begin. I love watching mom’s try to get their sweet babes to calm … each mom moves different, shhh’s different, and snuggles different. I love watching Dad’s look into the eyes of their offspring with the MOST PROUD eyes EVER.
Heck, with the uproar of the Lion King coming back I have had more then just these guys hold up their beauties just as Simba was lifted to the sky … “Look …. Look at this perfect baby I MADE”
It gives me all the feels. But instead of blabbing on… take a peek at this dude. This chubby cheeked, sleepy little prince. Those are probably the BEST smooching cheeks I have laid eyes on since my own little Selvik bloods were under the 13 pound range.
